Holiday Happenings Around Lynchburg

The holiday season has officially begun. Living in an apartments in Lynchburg, VA, you may be looking for some things to do this week. Look no further; here is your guide to holiday events in Lynchburg.

Wednesday, Nov. 30

Performances of the Hamner Theater’s The Homecoming , a Nelson County Christmas story written by Earl Hamner. Other performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1-3, 7-10 and 14-17 and 2 p.m. Dec. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18. Tickets are $15, and reservations are advised.

Lynchburg College will host a Holiday Fair , featuring jewelry, crafts, gifts and more, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Memorial Ballroom. Admission is free, and proceeds from vendor sales will go to student activities at the college. Call (544) 8254 or visit www.lynchburg.edu for more information.

Thursday, Dec. 1

Puppets Alamode, a musical and theatrical puppet program offered to those with special needs, will perform a Christmas Puppet Show at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church on Timberlake Road. Admission is a $1 donation at the door.

Friday, Dec. 2

The Lynchburg College Choral Union and Chamber Orchestra will present its ninth-annual performance of Handel’s Messiah at 7:30 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church. Jong Kim, professor of music and director of the college’s choral activities and vocal studies, will conduct, with guest soloists Penelope Shumate, Mary Keller Creswell, Christopher Swanson and Derrick Thompson. Tickets are $10.

The Lynchburg Art Club will hold its Christmas Show and Sale from 10 - 3 and 5 to 8 p.m.  on 12/2 and 10 a.m. to 2 on 12/3. Original paintings will be sold for $99 or less, as well as crafts, note cards and baked goods.

Amherst’s latest round of ArtMeters will be unveiled at 5:45 p.m., right before the town’s Christmas parade. The project started three years ago, with local artists painting the town’s defunct parking meters, which are displayed along Main Street and other downtown side streets. This year, the 12 new meters (for a grand total of 54) were painted by local students to celebrate the county’s 250th birthday.

Saturday, Dec. 3

Downtown Lynchburg’s Holiday Traditions will run from 10 to 2 on Dec. 3, 10 and 17. Events include pictures with The Grinch, free horse-drawn carriage rides and appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as the Community Market’s Mistletoe Market .

Forest Dance Academy will perform The Grinch at 1 and 7 p.m. at Jefferson Forest High School (they’ll also appear on their own float in the Lynchburg Christmas Parade the next day). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or the studio.

A Home Holiday Tour , featuring various historic houses in Appomattox, from 1 to 5. Tickets are $12.

The Lynchburg Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings, with guest performers from the Lynchburg City Schools Elementary Honors Strings program, will perform Sounds of the Season at 2 p.m. in the E.C. Glass High School auditorium. Selections include “The Polar Express,” “We Three Strings” and “Jingle Bells Hoedown.” Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students.

Avoca Museum will host is 19 th annual Christmas Open House on the first two weekends in December. Holiday decorations, baked goods and gift shop items will be featured at the “Home for Christmas” fundraiser. Entertainment will include the First Baptist Church Hand Bell Choir on Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. Open house hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 4 and Dec. 11. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children and students, children 5 and under free.

Sunday, Dec. 4

Point of Honor will host a Christmas Open House from noon to 4 p.m. It will be decorated for the holidays with native greens, a yule log and other customs of the early 1800s. Admission is free.

The pops concert will include a jazz arrangement of “White Christmas” and favorites like “Deck the Halls.” The Vespers service includes nine lessons and carols; this year’s program will include works by John Rutter, as well as songs that originate from around the world. Admission is free, and a chocolate party will follow in the Wailes Lounge.

Randolph College’s Christmas Vespers concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Houston Memorial Chapel.
