The American Red Cross is sending out an urgent message for people to donate blood.
The Red Cross usually forecasts lower donations during the summer months, but this June and July have been well below expectations. Now they need help from you to build their supplies back up before it stars to affect local patients.
"During the summer, we lose our high schools and our colleges, which account for anywhere between 15 and 20 % of our regular donors and sponsors," said Bill Johnson, account representative, with the American Red Cross.
But for some reason, this summer there have been even fewer donations, this means, potentially there could have been less blood sent to the hospitals for patient surgeries.
When less blood is sent to hospitals, it could end up putting some surgeries on hold, something the Red Cross does not want to take any chances on.
So the Red Cross has put out an appeal, and since the alert went out on July 9, donations have picked up almost 15 %. But more is needed.
Red Cross officials are hoping to keep that blood pumping in this summer, because it's being used about as fast as it's coming in.
"The need is always there. We never know when you, or I, or a family member is going to need blood. And it's only supplied by generous, volunteer donors," said Johnson.
The Red Cross says they are in special need of blood types O -, B - and A-.
