Most features revolve around the convenience for the resident. The most in-demand amenity is a 24-hour fitness center in the building. Interestingly, in other polls, this feature is low on the list.
According to a survey on the Times Union Places and Spaces blog in-unit washers and dryers were the most essential features for renters. Nearby parking was a close second with 67 percent.
Renters also like to have their own private area. Whether it's a patio or a balcony, someplace outside that people can call their own is a big plus.
However, under many state fire codes, it is illegal to use a grill within 10 feet of certain buildings. So some apartment communities create large common grill stations outside so renters can still enjoy a good burger.
Pets — and allowing them in the space — are important for renters. The third most popular amenity, pet friendliness, scored around 53 percent of votes.
Renters don't expect apartment buildings to be made out of recyclable material, but they do expect the owner and community is responsible when it comes to the environment.
