Enjoy the City or Natural Beauty in Lynchburg, VA

Enjoy the City or Natural Beauty in Lynchburg, VA

Joseph Coupal - Monday, May 14, 2018

Walden Pond Apartments, Lynchburg, VALiving in an apartment in Lynchburg, VA is wonderful. The city has so much to see and do while still keeping that small-town feel. But, minutes outside the city is natural beauty and gorgeous escapes you can enjoy anytime. There is natural, beautiful countryside that surrounds our city which makes Lynchburg a wonderful place to live. With so much to do, there is no better place in Virginia to live. Now that summer is right around the corner, we thought we'd share two gorgeous spots where you can cool off.

Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a watering hole called Panther Fall. If you are interested in cliff diving, or if you just want to enjoy watching your friends do it, this is the place to go. Panther Falls has a series of waterfalls and high rocks where you can jump off of into the cold water. During the summer, it is a perfect place to enjoy time with friends and to cool off while taking in the striking scenery.

If you don’t want to jump off the cliff, then you can enjoy the calmer waters further down from the waterfall where you can enjoy a relaxing swim or picnic.

Another wonderful watering home is Ivy Lake. Enjoy the stunning Virginia countryside with mountains and hills that surround this lake. Swim, canoe, fish or just relax on Ivy Lake. There is even a concrete boat ramp leading into the water.

Virginia Is The Best State On The East Coast

Virginia Is The Best State On The East Coast

Joseph Coupal - Monday, April 30, 2018

Walden Pond Apartments, Lynchburg, VVirginia - what a place to live. Growing up here is one of the greatest gifts. Simply because you get the best of both worlds. Between mountains, beaches, countrysides, cities, and an obvious change in each season, Virginia proves to be the best state on the East Coast.

1. Mountains

Especially mountains in the fall. Whether you grew up hiking them all the time, or if you have never hiked a day in your life, you can always brag about having the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in your homeland.

2. Virginia Beach.

We live on the coast. Day trip to the beach? Not a problem. Pack up your car and get going with suntan oil and beach chairs.

3. Countryside

There are plenty of windy back roads to roll windows down and drive. Cows. Horses. Goats. Dogs. You'll pass them all.

4. Cities

Virginia Beach. Richmond. Norfolk. Roanoke. Lynchburg. Charlottesville. And like all Virginians, we claim D.C. as one of our own, too.

5. The weather

In the spring, there are beautiful flowers and rain. Being in a college town, the summers are laid back and feel like home. The students are gone, and it gives the rest of the residents a chance to sit around the pool and enjoy the sun. In the fall, the leaves change and temperatures start to drop. There is football and apple picking, along with lots of flannel. In the winter is when people question whether or not Virginia is a northern or southern state. It all just depends on the year. The winters will no doubt get cold, but the snowfall depends on the year. Some years get several feet, and some years get short of an inch. Whatever the amount, this is a state that can, and does get snow.

No other state is able to brag about the same mountains, beaches, countrysides, cities, or weather like this one. Who cares if no one knows whether Virginia is a northern or southern state, it's the best state regardless.

Virginia Ranks 9 in Top Ten Best States 2018

Virginia Ranks 9 in Top Ten Best States 2018

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Walden Pond Apartments, Lynchburg, VAMost Americans do not choose where they grow up and often end up living in the same place as adults, either for financial reasons or because of social and familial connections. Still, many Americans choose to pack up and move to a new state — usually in search of better life.

People who contemplate such a move would certainly consider a state’s overall quality of life. While every person is different and may weigh certain factors more than others, quality of life generally consists of a multitude of factors, including an area’s economy, jobs market, income levels, poverty, crime, education levels, health care, transportation, and whether the area is generally desirable.

Based on these factors and others, 24/7 Wall St. ranked all 50 states for overall quality of life.

9. Virginia

  • 10-yr. population change: +10.1% (21st largest increase)
  • Annual unemployment: 4.0% (tied — 14th lowest)
  • Poverty rate: 11.0% (tied — 12th lowest)
  • Life expectancy at birth: 79.1 years (25th shortest)

Problems with crime tend to be local rather than statewide, but across Virginia crime tends to be low and the state is relatively crime free compared to most of the country. There were just 217 violent crimes reported in the state for every 100,000 residents, nearly half the national figure of 397 incidents per 100,000 people.

Virginians are also among the most likely to have a college degree, which often results in higher incomes and better quality of life across a population. Just over 38% of Virginia adults have a bachelor’s degree, compared to 31.3% of adults nationwide. This high educational attainment rate may help explain Virginia’s relatively low unemployment rate. Last year, average unemployment was 4.0%, well below the national average rate of 4.9%.

They have melt-in-your-mouth chocolate treats. When you visit Altus for the first time, you'll want to make sure you bring your appetite. Visitors can enjoy a whole menu full of sweets, such as homemade chocolate cake...

...a selection of fresh gelato...

...or a blended chocolate frappe. Even the specialty coffee drinks are chocolate themed!

The real pros will combine the best of both worlds with an order of specialty hot chocolate and a flight of the Altus favorites.

And in case those aren't enough options, there's also fondue.

If you're not a huge fan of chocolate, there are plenty of other options to choose from. A particular favorite is a coconut brownie served with gelato.

So if you've got a sweet tooth, be sure to head over to this fantastic local chocolate lounge. You won't be disappointed!

Renting is NOT Throwing Money Away

Renting is NOT Throwing Money Away

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Walden Pond Apartments, Lynchburg, VAYou might have heard the old adage “renting is throwing money away.” It seems like common sense. You don’t buy anything when you rent, but you get to keep the house you buy. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Buying a home is a lot more complicated than “Rent, except you get to keep it.” Not only are there major additional costs that you’ll be paying for the rest of your life (like repairs, renovations, and property tax), but for the first several years of your mortgage, you’re barely even gaining any equity!

Should you keep renting? Is renting better than buying? Or should you purchase a home? Is buying the better choice? Your answer is going to depend on a massive number of factors, including:

  • The local price-to-rent ratio.
  • How long you’ll live there.
  • Your alternative investment options.
  • Your assumptions about inflation and investment gains.
  • Maintenance, repair, insurance, property tax and capital expense costs.
  • The rate at which rents rise.
  • Et cetera, etc., etc.

You get the picture. This myth that “renting is throwing money away” is wrongheaded. In fact, it’s dangerous. It oversimplifies a life-changing, six-figure decision. It’s probably caused thousands (or millions) of people to buy houses they later regret.

While it’s true that you’re buying an asset when you purchase a house, it’s an asset that barely keeps pace with inflation, and you lose the opportunity to make other investments. Not to mention, renting is underrated.

Lynchburg, VA: Where Your Money Goes Farthest

Lynchburg, VA: Where Your Money Goes Farthest

Joseph Coupal - Monday, March 12, 2018

Walden Pond Apartments, Lynchburg, VAWe ranked the places in Virginia where the cost of living is the lowest; where your salary goes the furthest. And when you have the luxury of choosing where to live in the Old Dominion, then the cost of living should play a role in the decision.

So we did the work for you and crunched the numbers to find the cities that have lower food, energy, and housing costs. After the dust settled on our analysis, we were left a list of cities in Virginia that were of the best value for your money.

#6. Lynchburg, VA

There are basic necessities that you have to buy no matter where in the country you live. Those things include:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Gas
  • Health Insurance
  • Utilities
  • Transportation

You can then compare the cost of these things in each of the places in Virginia to figure out which is the least expensive.

What you are left with is a ‘Cost of Living Index’ that normalizes to 100 for an average place in the United States.

So we used that cost of living index in order to rank the places in Virginia that have more than 5,000 people.

And just so you can better understand how the cost of living index works, 100 is the average cost of a place in the United States. A score of 90 means that the place cost 10% less than average. In other words, a score of 90 means it’s 10% less expensive.

Lynchburg, VA

  • Population: 75,657
  • Services: 95
  • Groceries: 92
  • Health Care: 95
  • Housing: 80
  • Transportation: 87
  • Utilities: 98

Lynchburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the banks of the James River. Lynchburg is known as the ‘City of Seven Hills’ or the ‘Hill City’. In the 1860s, Lynchburg was the only major city in Virginia that was not recaptured by the Union before the end of the American Civil War. There is a lot to do and see here.
