The summer heat is here and if you’re looking for a fun indoor project to brighten your apartment and stay cool, consider starting a container garden! These little gardens are perfect for an apartment due to their size and versatility. Now is a wonderful time to tackle this project because so many gardening materials are available, including fresh plants like herbs and veggies. Plus, with the proper care, your garden can yield delightful herbs and vegetables all year long.
At Walden Pond, we believe it’s how you live that matters and healthy eating with fresh ingredients is part of that philosophy. We’ve asked our gardening gurus for their top tips and hacks to create your own container garden.
Here are the steps they recommend:
- Decide Where It Goes: It’s important to choose a spot in your apartment that gets lots of light. During warmer months, outdoor spaces, such as balconies and patios are great choices. You also could set up a table near a large window or sliding glass door that gets lots of light. Here’s a tip: Think vertical. Hanging planters and shelves near lager windows can give you even more space!
- Decide What to Grow: Before you begin planting, give some thought to what you want to grow in your container garden. Herbs typically work best because they don’t take up much space and are so versatile. Consider herbs, such as basil, sage, thyme, cilantro, and mint. Red and green cabbage as well as tomatoes can work too.
- Get the Materials: Once you’ve got your location and know what you want to plant, it’s time to gather the tools and materials you’ll need. Food52 has some great tips for getting started and choosing the right materials. Here’s another tip: Don’t forget to get high-quality soil. It can make a big difference!
- Build It: Now that you’ve got everything, you can build your container garden. How adventurous you want to be is up to you. If you’re new to gardening or want a low-maintenance approach, you can buy containers and small pots at local hardware stores or garden nurseries. Apartment Therapy has a great set of instructions for building a container garden with helpful insights.
We hope these tips inspire you to start your own container garden this summer. It’s a great way to beat the heat and brighten up your apartment. And think of all the wonderful herbs and veggies you can enjoy. Do you have other gardening tips to share? We’d love to hear them or see photos of your container garden on our Facebook page.
